The President of Haiti, President Jovenel Moise has reportedly been assassinated in his residence. He was assassinated by some unidentified attackers who broke into his private residence during the night.
According to Prime Minister Claude Joseph, the unknown assailants who were speaking Spanish attacked Moïse’s residence around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, shooting him and his wife. He described the attack as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act” and called on the public to remain calm.
“Measures are being taken in order to ensure the continuity of the state and to protect the nation,” he said in the statement. The National Police and the military are in control of the security situation, he said.
Moïse was elected in 2016 and took office in February 2017. The White House is assessing and gathering information about the “horrific attack,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on MSNBC.
“We’ll be helpful in any way to the people of Haiti, the government of Haiti, if there’s an investigation,” she said.
