EPL: Wayne Rooney picks best goal ever in Premier League history

Former Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney has picked Robin van Persie’s volley in Red Devils’ win over Aston Villa in 2013 as the best goal in Premier League history.

Rooney and Van Persie partnered in the Man United attack in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season at Old Trafford.

Their partnership played a key role in United winning the Premier League title that year.

And during his analysis on Tottenham players after Spurs defeated Newcastle 4-0 at the weekend, Rooney said of Van Persie’s effort, “For me that’s the best goal in Premier League history.”

Rooney also revealed how he worked on building a relationship with Van Persie, which was similar to what the Dutch striker had at Arsenal with Cesc Fabregas.

“I didn’t want to be that deep at times,” said the former United captain.

“I was encouraged to come deep at times but not all the time, but still be a threat around the box, I had to try to get the balance right.

“At times I did go a lot deeper, I’d have Rio and Vidic telling me to push on and get further forward.”
