Durban Gen Sangoma ‘Bab Moyeni’ Actor Prince Phuma’s Inspiring Humble Beginnings

Durban Gen actor Phumanyova Nkosinathi Dlamini, professionally known as Prince Phuma has shared his inspiring humble beginnings.

Prince Phuma who acts as a Sangoma on Durban Gen revealed that he worked as a security guard before he got into acting full-time.

He also took time to explain the origins of his stage name saying he is a member of the Zulu Royal Family. Prince Phuma was born in a remote place called Sundumbili in Mandeni, KwaZulu Natal. He said:

I am called Prince Phuma because of my mum who was a princess from the Zulu Royal Family. I was born in a remote place called Sundumbili in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal

Phumanyova Nkosinathi Dlamini left his home area and is now based in Lenasia South, Joburg. He worked for many different security companies, such as Top Ten Security, SSG, GNG and Alizwa Security in Ladysmith before embarking on a full-time journey as an actor.

He said he started acting by accident because he had lost hope in the profession after he failed to land gigs. Prince Phuma said:

Acting came to me accidentally because I had lost hope in it. I grew up with a dream of acting, but it faded up when opportunities didn’t come my way.

The actor said he did auditions through video submissions during the lockdown. He recently landed another role as a pastor on etv adult show, The Black Door.

Prince Phuma said that he used to visit theatres in the townships. He always wanted to join Gibson Kente but when that opportunity came he was unable to join because his mother wouldn’t allow him to travel. He said:

I grew up being very active in the stage plays. My dream was to join Gibson Kente and that opportunity came in 1992, but my mum wouldn’t allow me to go to Johannesburg because there was political violence by that time,.

In 2018, his friend was called to be featured as an extra on the etv soapie Rhythm City, and he told him to go on his behalf. He joined the soapie as a board member of Suffocate’s business. Prince Phuma said:

I was a board member of Suffocate’s business. From there on I’ve never looked back. I also did a short course in acting in 2020.

After landing a role on Rhythm City he landed roles on Generations: The LegacyQueen SonoSavage BeautyGog Flo (The Protector)Nginike Isandla, and many others. Prince Phuma recently landed a role on Durban Gen as a Sangoma named Bab Moyeni.
