LISTEN: Veteran American Hip Hop Producer Dr Dre Jumps Onto Amapiano Bandwagon
The South African Amapiano sound continues to break barriers with veterans and newbies in the music industry endorsing or adopting the genre.
Since the Amapiano sound left South African shores, it has continued to grow and there is no stopping it. With powerhouses such as The Weeknd, Drake and Beyonce releasing dance-inspired albums this year, more American musicians are expected to jump onto the dance music bandwagon.
The latest American powerhouse to jump onto the Amapiano bandwagon comes as a surprise as he made his name primarily as a Hip Hop and RnB producer. West Coast legendary producer and rapper Dr Dre, real name Andre Romelle Young, becomes the latest American to endorse the Amapiano sound.
The Still Dre musician played a part in the song Power (Remember Who You Are) produced by Nigerian disk jockey and record producer SPINALL, real name Oluseye Desmond Sodamola. Dr Dre mixed the vocals to the song which features American RnB musician Summer Walker, renowned French producer DJ Snake, and British songstress Äyanna. Nicholas “Unknown Nick” Audino and The Eggman helped with production.
The track is featured in the short film, The Flipper’s Skate Heist which was released on the 24th of last month. According to a press release, the film follows “two masked skaters as they rob a guarded NTWRK truck for a pair of exclusive Dr Dre roller skates.” The two masked skaters make their way to Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace.
The song samples Sinnerman by the late multitalented American musician Nina Simone, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon. Power (Remember Who You Are) samples the piano and interpolates lyrics from the track by Nina Simone.
