Miss South Africa 2022: Designers Behind The Evening Gowns

This year, there were five fashion designers behind the luxurious dresses for the Miss South Africa 2022 top 10 contestants. The designers, who have designed dresses for the likes of Zozibini Tunzi, Shudufhadzo Musida and Demi-Leigh Tebow (Nel-Peters), carefully designed dresses for two of the top 10 finalists.

Media personality and businesswoman Thando Thabete’s swimwear and lingerie brand, Thabooty’s, sponsored the swimwear section of the pageant.

Here’s everything you need to know about the five designers.

Durban-based designer Casey Jeanne has made dresses for television presenters Kim Jayde and Zuraida Jardine, actress Kajal Bagwandeen and fitness specialist, Lisa Raleigh. Jeanne’s pageant look focused on cloth with in-house designed fabric and her inspiration was texture and powerful women.

“I believe that design needs to be considerate of the environment. While it cannot be so out-of-touch that it doesn’t fit within the scope of the pageant, you also want to design something that is unique and unexpected,” she expressed.

Jeanne designed evening gowns for Miss South Africa runner-up, Ayanda Thabethe and Lebogang Mahlangu.

Johannesburg-based designer Georges Malelu had the honour of designing a dress for 28-time Grammy-winning singer, Beyoncé in 2018 for the Global Citizen concert. His inspiration for the Miss SA pageant was Oscar gowns. His pageant look and feel were copper and platinum.

“I’m including a mermaid silhouette in my designs with structured garments that deliver an element of surprise. I crossover between couture and ready-to-wear and like to create a balance between these two,” said Malelu.

Malelu designed dresses for Luvé Meyer and Keaoleboga Nkashe.

Jolandie Fouche, based in Potchefstroom, North West, has designed dresses for former Miss South Africa titleholders Lalela Mswane, Shudufhadzo Musida and Tamaryn Green. Fouche’s pageant look and feel were copper and glitter-strewn black velvet ball gowns. Her inspiration was Mzansi’s natural resources.

“When I design a dress for any woman, it’s important to capture her essence within the dress. Also, pageants are extremely competitive so you have to ensure that your dress makes a lasting impression on the judges for all the right reasons, while at the same time, complimenting the contestant and accentuating her beauty and personality.”

Fouche designed dresses for Tamsyn Jack and Miss South Africa 2022, Ndavi Nokeri.

“I design with my client in mind, what will work best to accentuate and compliments her best attributes so she can look and feel her most beautiful.”

Aria designed dresses for Anarzade Omar and Luyanda Zuma.

Based in Zola, Soweto, Zamaswazi Mathole has also designed dresses for previous Miss South Africa titleholders Shudufhadzo Musida and Lalela Mswane. Mathole’s look and feel were gold, copper and diamonds. His inspiration was “the rich African earth and everything that lies beneath it”.
