Omicron’s BA.2 still dominates – but next wave could be driven by a new variant- scientist in South Africa says—

As scientists monitor Covid-19 infections across South Africa ahead of the country’s potential fifth wave, one expert says it could be driven by a new variant.

“Since the second wave, this [has been] the case, so it is quite likely that the next wave will be driven by a new variant,” KRISP infectious diseases specialist Dr Richard Lessells told Health24.

“But we are again in a period of uncertainty [of] whether a new variant will be a descendent of Omicron, or whether a new distinct variant will emerge somewhere in the world that is unrelated to the previous variants of concern (VOC), and that is able to gain an advantage and spread widely,” he added.
