Republicans attack ‘welfare queen’ and strip club manager Volodymyr Zelensky after Congress speech

republicans attack welfare queen and strip club manager volodymyr zelensky after congress speech

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s trip to Washington DC appeared to be an emphatic success with strong statements of commitment from counterpart, Joe Biden, backed up by a generous new package of military aid.

But there were also signs of growing divisions over US support for Ukraine, as the wing of the Republican Party associated with former US president Donald Trump showed hostility towards the visiting leader.

President Zelensky’s speech to Congress received a standing ovation from most members, but representatives Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz – who have both called for an audit of funding for Ukraine – remained seated with the former playing with her phone during the address.

Ms Boebert reiterated calls for an audit after the speech and said she would not support further funding for Ukraine without one.

Donald Trump Jr branded Mr Zelensky an “ungrateful international welfare queen” in response to a comment from Ukraine’s president that US support was “not enough” – despite a reported $45bn (£37bn) support package “under consideration”.

Twitter owner Elon Musk, who encouraged voters to elect Republicans at the midterm elections, tweeted his response to Mr Zelensky’s remarks with an exclamation mark.

Political opponents drew attention to recent revelations that Mr Trump paid no federal income tax in the last year of his presidential term.

Firebrand Republican Congresswoman, Marjorie Taylor Greene, attacked Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, for “handing a $47bn check to Zelensky… But in my district, many families and seniors can’t afford food and many businesses are struggling because of Biden policies.”

Former Republican Congressional candidate, Scott Stephenson, said the “reception of Zelensky’s speech tonight – mass adulation by our ‘leaders’ – seals the deal. Our Republic is dead.”

Popular Fox News host, Tucker Carlson, a frequent critic of aid to Ukraine, attacked Mr Zelensky’s military clothing, which he has worn throughout the war.

“The president of Ukraine arrived at the White House, dressed like the manager of a strip club and started to demand money,” said Mr Carlson.

“Amazingly, no one threw him out. Instead, they did whatever he wanted.”

Conservative TV journalist Benny Johnson also objected on Twitter to the Ukrainian leader’s outfit: “This ungrateful piece of sh*t does not have the decency to wear a suit to the White House — no respect the country that is funding his survival. Track suit wearing eastern european con-man mafia. Our leaders fell for it. They have disgraced us all. What an incredible insult.”

Despite such attacks from Republicans, Mr Zelensky said he was confident that support for Ukraine would continue on a bipartisan basis.

Senator McConnell, the most senior elected Republican, said “continuing our support for Ukraine is morally right, but it is not only that. It is also a direct investment in cold, hard, American interests”.
