Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Break Up After Two Years of Dating, but “Will Continue to Be Best Friends”… After two years together, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have decided to end their relationship but made it clear that there are no hard feelings about the breakup.
The pair announced the split on Instagram on Wednesday by posting a joint statement to their respective accounts.
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” their Instagram Stories read. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward ❤️❤️❤️ Camila and Shawn.”
The fact that the two pop stars will remain close despite their split should come as no surprise given that they were friends for several years before things took a romantic turn. After being photographed engaging in some light PDA over the summer, Mendes and Cabello made their first public appearance as a couple at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards where they performed their new single “Señorita.” They went on to perform the song together in November at the American Music Awards, as well.
The musicians spent much of the pandemic quarantined together in Miami, which Mendes says “really brought” him and Cabello “together.” Speaking to Audacy Check In about his song “Summer of Love,” the singer said, “It feels good. It was like writing about the first couple of months actually in the lockdown. Camila and I were so lucky because we were able to just kind of be in a still moment, and it was the first time in the past six years that we’ve been just able to relax and not work at all. We were going on bike rides around Miami, and it just felt really beautiful.” He added, “Just kind of writing about that. Had a lot of nostalgia at that time, and I think without that time we found it a lot harder to connect. It really brought us together.”
