Trevor Noah’s Announcement Sparks Debate Between Americans and South Africans Over His Legacy

United States-based South African comedian Trevor Noah has sparked a heated debate on social media between Americans and South Africans following his shock announcement that his time at The Daily Show is over after seven years.

After longtime host Jon Stewart left the show in 2015, the 38-year-old comedian took over.

Despite the fact that the odds appeared to be stacked against him, Trevor Noah quickly established himself as a force in his own right with his own brand that appealed to younger viewers.

People all over the world, particularly South Africans, were shocked to learn of Trevor Noah’s impending departure from Comedy Central’s flagship series.

They remarked on how Trevor Noah had performed admirably since taking over from John Stewart. They also said that finding someone on par with Trevor Noah and John Stewart would be difficult for Comedy Central.

Some also complained that the South African was leaving The Daily Show much earlier than they had anticipated.

@JustBreathe0507

“Why does The Daily Show keep breaking my heart?? Trevor Noah won me over when I mourned Jon Stewart, certain no one could make it as razor sharp and funny. But it was his thoughtful interviewing approach that made him really shine.
I can’t imagine lighting will strike twice.”

“Jon Stewart was my entire childhood Trevor Noah was supposed to do this all of my adulthood.”

@haseebvirk

“Following Jon Stewart was never going to be easy! But Trevor Noah made the show his own!”

@MooreSaiyan

“There were monumental shoes to fill after Jon Stewart walked away from the desk and Trevor Noah has done a magnificent job at the helm. Sad to see him go.”

@barrysoscary

“I was late to the Jon Stewart party. By the time I finally appreciated TDS, the transition to the Trevor Noah era was beginning. And I fucking loved it. Trevor & his team expanded my mind & helped me navigate through scary political seasons. So bummed, but best wishes, Trevor.”

What Some Americans Said About Trevor Noah’s Time On The Daily Show

Some Americans, however, welcomed Trevor’s departure, claiming that he had never been as good or as funny as John Stewart. Some even called him a failure.

@JayLagan

“Fun fact: In the 7 years Trevor Noah hosted “The Daily Show”, it only won 3 awards. Now compare that to when Jon Stewart hosted it. In addition, check out the Rotten Tomatoes ratings for TDS under Trevor Noah against TDS under Jon Stewart. This guy has been a monumental failure.”

@JoeConchaTV

“Trevor Noah leaving The Daily Show after seven years. Made the announcement last night. Show has greatly underperformed from a ratings perspective since the Jon Stewart era.”

@RamasScreen

“Got nothing against Trevor Noah.

I wish him all the best on his next endeavors.

But compared to the great Jon Stewart, Trevor has always been too milquetoast for me.

Jon Stewart had no problem holding his guests accountable or putting their feet to the fire like Judith Miller.”

@xSmoot

“I doubt this but if this means Jon Stewart coming back, I would absolutely start watching again. I feel like there’s no coincidence that once Jon left, everything started falling to shit in America. Nothing against Trevor Noah but it wasn’t the same program once he took over.”

@OrdinaryBulk

“Jon Stewart was good. Trevor was a cheap imitation. A colored prop. From South Africa who was hired to make jokes. There was no political satire or comedy it was stand up SNL style snarky quips. Viacom chasing diversity dollars. Weird how Colbert/Stewart left when Trump came.”

@ExternalCoolant

“Can we finally come together and be glad Trevor Noah isn’t on the daily show anymore?
I think he’s a comedian and all but he just doesn’t have a message to bring to people the way Jon Stewart did.”

What South Africans  Said About Trevor Noah’s Time On The Daily Show

However, South Africans came to Trevor Noah’s defence. They argued that he had done a splendid job after taking over from Jon Stewart. They insisted that people should appreciate both talents instead of pitting them against each other.

@mightiestpen

“Definitely. He was never going to fill Stewart’s shoes. No one was. Nonetheless, he did a great job of maintaining the shows integrity.”

@VelaphiM3

“Good on him for leaving, the only reason The Daily Show was relevant to the actual world, unlike American ‘world’ series anything. Let the Americans laugh themselves into irrelevance since they looking for jokes. They are becoming Jokes if not already.”

@Esq_Kizangila

“Trevor Noah was super hilarious and still is! Reading the comments from “some” people claiming he wasn’t funny and that they haven’t watched for seven years…so pray tell, how did you find him not funny by not watching at all.”
