Uproar As South African Government Plans To Build A R22-Million Flag Monument.. South Africans are up in arms with the Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, over the controversial R22-million flag monument.
The government wants to erect the flag at Freedom Park in Pretoria to commemorate South Africa’s history, marking a break from colonialism and apartheid. The department said government had budgeted R17m for the installation of the flag and another R5m for geotechnical studies. The flag will also serve as a national landmark and tourist attraction.
The structure will be 120 metres tall, with a length and width of 10 by 15m respectively. The flag monument will be visible during the day and at night.

South Africans have expressed discontent over the new development, which they think is the least amongst the country’s priorities.
In a series of angry tweets, media personality Bonang Matheba, who has never liked Nathi Mthethwa, was scathing:
“Fire this man. Please. You’re useless and we all hate you. You’re useless and we all hate you @NathiMthethwaSA.”
Check out some of the reactions from Mzansi.
Nathi Mthethwa is a national disgrace, a pandemic of sort. He came back to the office for the second term JUST to add,
– an a flag
Nathi Mthethwa is one of the useless ministers alongside Mbalula. 22 Million Rands to construct a Flag that is visible during the day and night in a developing country that is sinking economically, will never make sense to me.
I think we have tolerated a lot of unjustifiable bs from the officials we’ve put in power to lead us, such as Nathi Mthethwa. A R22 Million Flag is an insult to every taxpayer in South Africa.
Television personality Penny Lebyane sees this differently, however.
Obviously Nathi Mthethwa is not liked by a whole industry that hates itself so nothing new there for me. But l have a question. How did they build your favourites: The Eiffel Tower in Paris, Statue Of Liberty in New York, Christ The Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro? Why do you like them? have not studied the feasibility document on the flag to cost R22m so I’m limited there but it doesn’t sound like a lot of money for something that will outlive me.
