Which Late Night Host Is Leaving?

Late-night television and nightly political satire will miss “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah, who has announced his departure from the Comedy Central series on Thursday after seven years at the helm. The South African comedian added a “third world” perspective to a talk-show circuit dominated by white American and Anglo comedians. Noah’s outsider status, which was initially viewed as a disadvantage in his line of work, eventually proved to be his greatest asset.

By connecting us to the rest of the world during a particularly tumultuous period in American politics, the comedian reminded his audience that we weren’t the first to go through such turmoil and that we weren’t alone in our experience. Moreover, his astute and astute commentary on global affairs, foreign conflict, colonialism, and the realities of race and inequality inside and outside the United States made our spiralling state of the union seem less catastrophic.

“I’ve loved trying to find a way to make people laugh, even when the stories are particularly s—, even on the worst days,” he told the audience at Thursday’s “Daily Show” taping.

“I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, and when I got back out there, I realized there’s another part of my life out there that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows,” Noah said. He thanked Comedy Central for believing in “this random comedian nobody knew on this side of the world.”

Who Will Replace Trevor Noah Daily Show

People had their doubts about Noah when he first started (and a big controversy about some past tweets that surfaced as he was taking over for Stewart didn’t help), but he established himself as a smart, nuanced voice in late night—something that has become increasingly difficult with the increased fragmentation of TV audiences to streaming.

Amber Ruffin: Ruffin, a writer on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers and host of The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock, may be the most obvious Noah replacement. She’s a seasoned performer both in front of and behind the camera, with exceptional comic timing and the ability to tackle difficult topics with pathos. In addition, she’s gathered an impressive lineup of guests for her Peacock show, which begins streaming season three today.

Samantha Bee: Bee, the second-most obvious choice, is a Daily veteran who worked as a correspondent during the Stewart years. She left to host her own TBS show, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, which recently concluded its seven-season run. Bee is well-connected, well-respected, and a former Comedy Central employee, making her a likely choice to succeed Noah.

Ronny Chieng: Chieng, a senior correspondent on Daily, has a talent for combining comedy and cultural criticism. He rose to prominence on Daily with his scathing critique of Fox News personality Jesse Watters, and he is a Malaysian native. He has used his background to create insightful segments about Asian Americans while covering other topics. He’s had two recent comedy specials and is someone to watch even if he doesn’t get this gig. Chieng would be a major network’s first Asian late-night host.
